Week of the Beers - Starting Sunday, November 9th

    AllBeerAcousticSaintArcherMissionLostAbbeyBallast

Ahhhhh, Beer Week. For some, it's just another week in the year gone unnoticed. For beer buffs, it's like Christmas, only 10 days long. And for many in the industry it gives a wonderful opportunity for friends, chefs and some of the greatest beer makers in the world to collaborate and appreciate each other's crafts just that much more. Not to mention it’s a great excuse to ‘sample’ beers at 11 AM. We choose 6 of our favorite San Diego breweries (not an easy task) and gave them each their own Cookie Takeover Day in our shop. One cookie will represent one beer and one company for a specific day this week, starting November 9th. Now that we had the breweries chosen, the hardest part was narrowing down the perfect beer from each company for their signature cookie. I wanted to build a range of flavors for the week so I used mix of flagship and seasonal brews, and everything from stouts to IPAs. My love for beer only magnified the pleasure I had in working with these great breweries in the past month. Some I’ve had the pleasure of knowing for years, others I’ve just met, but the wonderful thing was that I felt everyone was equally excited that we were making a cookie out of their beer, as I was to be able to work with these amazing breweries. I could just feel the passion for their product exude from everyone I met, from the owners to brewers to bartenders, that passion builds all of their astounding success. Here is the weekly breakdown: November 9th Saint Archer: Beer: Coffee Brown - Coffee Stout made with Bird Rock Coffee Beans Cookie: Cocoa, Malt, Chocolate Covered Espresso Beans November 10th Mission Brewery: Beer: Grapefruit IPA - Boldly hopped IPA, citrusy and a strong grapefruit finish Cookie: Grapefruit IPA Caramels infused with real grapefruit zest, sugar crust November 11th Acoustic Ales: Beer: Shake Your Money Maker - Nut Brown Ale, dry bitter and nutty Cookie: Malt, Honey Roasted Peanuts, Dark Chocolate Drizzle November 12th Lost Abbey: Beer: Judgment Day - Quadruple Ale strong ale brewed with raisins Cookie: Golden Raisin puree, molasses, vanilla a'peels November 13th Ballast Point: Beer: Dead Ringer- Oktoberfest Marzen with bitter and burnt caramel notes Cookie: Toasted Hazelnuts, burnt caramel, toffee bits, touch of chocolate November 14th Coronado Brewery: Beer: Imperial Pumpkin Ale- Pumpkin Ale brewed with real pumpkin and spices. Cookie: Pumpkin Pie Spices, Caramel, Honey Pumpkin Beer Glaze On November 15th we will bake up anything left of the flavors we have, but don’t bank on there being much extra. I have a feeling these will go fast, so come in and check our your favorite brew, in cookie form! Cheers and beers, everyone go out and enjoy the great SDBW! Cravors, don’t forget to get your holiday orders in early! Personal and corporate orders are open for holiday season, make it easy on yourself and get your holiday shopping done in one phone call!

healthy gluten free cookiesDid you know that over two billion cookies are consumed by Americans every year? Our society may have a slight obsession with these tasty little morsels, but they have been part of our culture for quite some time now. Chocolate chip cookies have been around for over 75 years, and Christmas cookies have been traced back to Medieval times. Our love of cookies has been a long time in the making, and even when certain food allergies have put up a road block for some cookie-lovers, bakers have found a solution. More people are being diagnosed with gluten allergies, keeping them from eating the typical flour-based cookies most people are familiar with. However, bakeries have come up with an assortment of healthy gluten free cookies that are just as delicious. Why Gluten Free? Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease that prevents a person from being able to digest gluten, which is a protein found in wheat and other grains. When a person with celiac ingests gluten, they can suffer from a number of different reactions, the most common being gastrointestinal issues. There are also many people without celiac disease that have a gluten sensitivity and feel ill after eating foods containing gluten. As celiac disease and gluten sensitivities have become better understood, more food manufacturers, restaurants and bakeries have started to make products gluten free products. Gluten Free Doesn't Mean Cookie Free! With more people being diagnosed with celiac disease every day, many bakers have made it a priority to come up with an assortment of gourmet cookies and other sweets that are totally gluten free. Alternative flours, such as rice flour, potato flour and corn flour, can be used instead in different combinations in gluten free baking recipes. Some bakers nix the flour altogether and have come up with completely flour free cookies and treats. Gluten free cookies are just as delicious as any others, and many people enjoy healthy gluten free cookies without even realizing they're gluten free! Interested in gluten free options but don't know where to buy gluten free cookies? Simply search online for local gluten free bakeries, or order a package online. Being gluten free doesn't mean a person should have to compromise on taste. There are many delicious gluten free treats available for people with celiac disease or a gluten sensitivity, allowing them to continue to enjoy the yummy cookies and treats our society is so fond of.
